Dialectical behavioral therapy

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a specific type of cognitive behavioral therapy that was originally created to treat chronically suicidal individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder(BPD) and it is now recognized as the gold standard psychological treatment for many illnesses. Clarity's director was formally trained in 2009 at Columbia University and is determined to providing best practice to individuals and families who would benefit from this form of treatment.  Please read below about the major skills that DBT focuses on.


Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a skill that focuses on using your "WiseMind".  Through the "What" and "How" skill's, individuals are able to practice focusing their though and not judging or labeling, and living in the here and now.

 

Interpersonal Effectivness

This module focuses on having effective relationships where individuals get their needs met, maintain relationships if wanted and keep their self respect.  Through the use skills like DEAR MAN, GIVE, and FAST, individual's have the ability to live a fuller life that has balance within their relationships.

Emotional Regulation

Individuals who benefit from this module tend to struggle with living life in the emotional mind.  The skills in this module teach about "riding the wave," using "PLEASE MASTER," and help to understand why emotions can present so all or nothing and how to balance the dialectic between logic and emotion.  

Distress Tolerance

 

There are things in life that are stressful, but we cannot eliminate it and have to find a way to tolerate it.  This module focuses on real strategies and skills to cope with stress and live with and through that stress.  Through the use of ACCEPTS,  IMPROVES, 5 Senses, 1/2 smile, and Radical Acceptance, individuals feel more empowered and in control.
